How to Search Madison County Court Records

The official Madison County Circuit Clerk page tells the public that most trial court information can be obtained through alacourt.gov using the Just One Look service. Just One Look is the public access tool run by the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts. It covers Circuit and District case data across the state, including Madison County. Required fees apply on every paid lookup.

Before you start, decide which court holds the case. Circuit Court covers felonies, civil cases over $20,000, divorce, and appeals from District Court. District Court covers misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, and preliminary felony hearings. Probate is a separate track for wills, estates, marriages, and deeds. Gather a full party name or, if possible, the case number. Have a credit card ready.

  1. Open the portal at pa.alacourt.com and choose Name Search or Case Number Search.
  2. Enter the first and last name of a party, or the exact case number when you have it.
  3. Select Madison County in the county filter when prompted by the portal.
  4. Pick the court division and case type for narrower results.
  5. Pay the search fee and open the result to view docket entries, parties, and disposition.
  6. For certified prints or paper-only files, complete the Records Request form and mail it to the Circuit Clerk.

The Probate office runs a separate recorded-document portal. Account creation is free, and the official Probate page says there is no fee for available portal documents. Schedule direct access to court and land records by emailing probate@madisoncountyal.gov or calling (256) 532-3330 at least one business day ahead.

Criminal cases add charge tables, statutes, bond fields, the arresting agency, and any sentence imposed.

Some fields are redacted in line with the Alabama Rules of Court-Record Privacy and Confidentiality. Social Security numbers, financial accounts, juvenile data, and sealed orders may be hidden or partly removed from public view.

Public Access Framework for Madison County Court Records

Alabama starts from a presumption that public writings are open. Alabama Code § 36-12-40 grants the right to inspect and copy public records unless another statute limits access. Section 36-12-41 orders public officers to give certified copies once the lawful fees are paid. Section 41-13-1 defines public records broadly to cover written, typed, and imaged documents made in public business.

For court files, layered rules apply. Alabama Rule of Judicial Administration 33 governs case-record access. The Alabama Rules of Court-Record Privacy and Confidentiality took effect on January 1, 2025. The Alabama Judicial System public access page hosts those rules and the State Law Library's access tools. The Madison Circuit Clerk's office charges search and copy fees on top of these rules, and remote access through AlaCourt requires payment.

Note: Public access does not equal free access. The Circuit Clerk charges per record, and AlaCourt charges per online search.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Madison County

Several record classes never appear in a public search. Juvenile files are closed under Alabama Code § 12-15-133, which lists the narrow set of people who can view juvenile legal and social records. Adoption files seal after final decree under § 26-10A-31. Mental-health proceeding files are limited by § 22-52-10.4. Grand jury work stays closed until the indictment becomes public.

Expungement also hides a record. Alabama's expungement law starts at § 15-27-1 and continues through § 15-27-2. The ALEA expungement page sets the first step: pull a certified criminal-history record before filing. A petition then goes to the criminal division of the Madison County Circuit Court where the case began. Common denial reasons include ineligible offenses, pending charges, unpaid fines, and missed waiting periods.
