Where Madison County Warrants Are Issued and Tracked

A warrant in Madison County starts with a court order. The Circuit Clerk lists a Warrants division as one of ten record categories. The Sheriff lists Warrants and Extraditions with a dedicated fax at (256) 533-5642. Active warrants for arrest may also pass through the city magistrate offices in Huntsville and Madison before reaching the Sheriff. A warrant may sit sealed during an active investigation and not appear in a public search at all.

Public lookups for Madison County warrants start at the Sheriff's Most Wanted page or inside the inmate roster after an arrest. The roster shows warrant-related charges, holds, bond type, and bond amount once the person is booked. Visit the official Madison County Most Wanted gateway to begin. The page opens with a disclaimer screen and then links to the active warrant list.

Federal warrants follow a separate path. Federal cases in Huntsville are filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney. Federal warrants are served by U.S. Marshals or partner agencies, not by the Madison County Sheriff.

How to Resolve a Madison County Warrant

Do not rely only on a web search to confirm whether a warrant exists. Some warrants are sealed or not posted online. Contact a defense attorney first. Then contact the right court or magistrate, post bond through the correct channel, and appear at every scheduled hearing. Missing a hearing in Madison County can trigger a capias or alias warrant on top of the original case.

  1. Speak with a defense attorney about the specific charge and the safest way to surrender.
  2. Confirm the warrant with the issuing court or magistrate. Huntsville municipal bonds go through the Huntsville Magistrate at (256) 427-7817. Madison municipal bonds go through the Madison Magistrate at (256) 772-5617.
  3. For Madison County misdemeanor or felony bonds, call the District Court Clerk's Office on the second floor of the courthouse, Room 200, at (256) 532-3373.
  4. Verify the bond amount with Detention Center staff at (256) 519-4800 before paying. Bond amounts can change after a court appearance.
  5. Post bond through the correct court, magistrate, or AlaPay/cashbondonline channel. The Sheriff does not process property bonds.
  6. Appear at every scheduled court date. Failure to appear triggers a capias.
  7. After resolution, confirm clearance with the issuing court rather than only the jail.

72-Hour Hearings on Madison County Warrants

After a warrant arrest in Madison County, the booking process moves on a tight clock. The jail page notes that an arresting agency may need felony warrants confirmed through the Madison County Magistrate Office. That step can take up to 48 hours. After the contract is received, the inmate gets a 72-hour hearing to be notified of charges and bond. The 72-hour hearing applies to district-court cases.

City inmates follow a different schedule. Huntsville city inmates go to Huntsville city court on the next business day if no bond has been set. Madison city inmates appear on Tuesdays at the jail or on Thursdays at the Madison municipal building, depending on the charge. These local rules can shift, so confirm court dates with the Detention Center at (256) 519-4800.

Limits and Sealed Madison County Warrants

Not every warrant shows up on a public page. Sealed search warrants stay closed during an active investigation. Some grand-jury warrants stay sealed until arrest. Juvenile warrants are confidential under Ala. Code § 12-15-133. Public lookups are best at the booking stage, not at the issuance stage. Use law enforcement or a defense attorney for active checks.

For related searches, see Madison County inmate records, criminal records, and court records. For sex-offender warrant checks, use the ALEA Sex Offender Registry or the Sheriff's sex-offender gateway. The state sex-offender registration rules sit at Ala. Code § 15-20A-8 and the driver-license designation rule at § 15-20A-18.
